How to Help

For those interested in contributing to managing feral cat populations in Lincoln, here are a few ways to get involved and stay engaged.

Cat Close Up

Donations / Volunteering

Consider donating to or volunteering with one of the following organizations:

Caretaking

Do you have the time and means to take care of feral cats? Consider becoming a feral cat colony caretaker through The Cat House or adopt a working cat through the Capital Humane Society!

Stay Educated (& Educate Others)

  • Most importantly, make sure you understand and adhere to appropriate levels of contact between feral cats and humans.

    • It is illegal to feed feral cats without a permit in Nebraska.

    • Leaving food out causes litter and attracts unwanted wildlife to our campus. Husker Cats has specific cat food and feeding times to prevent this from happening.

    • You should NEVER try to pet or otherwise handle a feral cat, even if they appear calm or friendly. They are wild and unsocialized, which makes it difficult to predict how they will react.

  • Stay knowledgable about the potential negative impacts of feral cats on wildlife populations.

  • Consider the pros and cons of different management strategies.

Responsible Pet Ownership

  • The following are good practices for cat owners to follow:

  • Get your cat neutered or spayed

  • Have your cat microchipped and vaccinated

  • Put a collar on your cat with ID tags

  • Try to keep your cat indoors as much as possible

    • Alternatives to letting them roam outside include: indoor playtime, cat trees, supervised time outside in enclosed spces (cat fences) or on a leash

    • Time spent outside unsupervised is a risk to your cat's health and safety (e.g., cars, poison, predators, unfriendly neighbors, getting lost, etc.) and is also harmful to local wildlife populations

  • Do not abandon or set your cat free

    • Do not adopt a cat unless you have the means to care for them long-term

    • If you can no longer care for your cat, you can surrender them to a shelter like Capital Humane Society
